The political landscape of Tamil Nadu has undergone a historic transformation as the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, emerged as the single largest party in the 2026 Assembly elections. In a stunning debut, the TVK secured 108 seats, falling just short of the 118-seat simple majority mark in the 234-member house. This result marks the first time in nearly 50 years that a new political outfit has broken the long-standing duopoly of the DMK and AIADMK. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin suffered a personal setback, losing his seat in Kolathur to a TVK candidate, though his son Udhayanidhi Stalin managed a victory in Chepauk. The DMK was reduced to 59 seats, while the AIADMK finished third with 47 seats. Vijay won both constituencies he contested, Tiruchirapalli and Perambur, by significant margins. As the counting concluded, the Congress party expressed a willingness to support the TVK to ensure a stable government. Supporters across the state have taken to the streets in massive celebrations, signaling a “blockbuster” shift in southern politics.
