Assam Severe Monsoon Inundation: Over 500,000 Affected and Fatalities Rise

Torrential monsoon downpours caused widespread severe flooding across Assam, drastically impacting human safety, rural livelihoods, and public infrastructure across multiple districts. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported a sharp escalation in flood severity, with over 560,000 individuals across 16 districts displaced or affected by rising river levels. Heavy rainfall triggered intense overflowing in the Brahmaputra River and its primary tributaries, resulting in widespread destruction of residential properties, submerged agricultural farmland, and severed connectivity links. Sivasagar, Charaideo, Golaghat, and Jorhat emerged as the hardest-hit regions, bearing a high loss of life due to drowning incidents and flash flooding. Disaster response teams—including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local district authorities—were deployed on emergency footings to execute evacuation operations and distribute essential relief materials. Medical camps and improvised relief shelters have been established to accommodate thousands of displaced families fleeing rising waters. Authorities are monitoring flood embankments and critical infrastructure, while state officials coordinate with central agencies to manage long-term recovery and mitigate ongoing risk as heavy precipitation forecasts remain in effect across the region.
