The Election Commission of India (ECI) has officially integrated its new ‘AI-Vigilance’ system to monitor digital campaigning across several major states heading into the 2026 assembly elections. This high-speed AI framework is designed to detect and flag “Deepfake” videos and synthetic audio clips within seconds of them appearing on social media platforms. In a move to protect the integrity of the democratic process, the ECI has partnered with top Indian AI firms to create a “Truth-Hash” database that verifies the authenticity of official candidate speeches. Political parties are now required to digitally sign all video content using blockchain-based watermarks before publishing them online. The system also uses Natural Language Processing (NLP) to track the spread of coordinated misinformation campaigns across regional languages like Marathi, Bengali, and Punjabi. Violators found using generative AI to defame opponents face immediate social media account suspension and legal action under the updated IT Act. This initiative makes India one of the first nations to implement a proactive, state-led AI defense against election interference. While civil rights groups have raised questions about potential surveillance, the ECI maintains that the tool is strictly for content verification. This digital “Shield of Democracy” is being watched by international observers as a potential global standard for fair elections in the AI era.
