India’s private space sector reached a new pinnacle on May 3, 2026, with the successful launch of “Mission Drishti,” the country’s largest privately developed Earth observation satellite. Developed by the Bengaluru-based startup GalaxEye, the 190 kg satellite was deployed into orbit via a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from California. Mission Drishti is being hailed as the world’s first “OptoSAR” satellite, uniquely integrating both Electro-Optical and Synthetic Aperture Radar sensors on a single platform. This breakthrough technology allows the satellite to capture high-resolution imagery through clouds, rain, and darkness, providing consistent “all-weather” data. Prime Minister Modi praised the mission as a testament to the “Atmanirbhar” spirit in high-tech innovation and private enterprise. The satellite features onboard AI processing powered by Nvidia’s Jetson platform, allowing it to analyze data in orbit rather than sending massive raw files back to Earth. This capability is expected to revolutionize sectors such as disaster management, precision agriculture, and maritime security. GalaxEye plans to expand this into a full constellation over the next five years to build a robust sovereign data infrastructure. The mission highlights India’s growing competitiveness in the global commercial space market, moving beyond state-led initiatives.
