India’s Surveillance Row: Political Tensions Over Foreign Tech

A significant political controversy has erupted in India as Opposition leaders allege that the central government is compromising national security through the use of foreign-made surveillance equipment. Claims have surfaced regarding the installation of Chinese-manufactured CCTV cameras at vital sensitive locations, which critics argue could serve as backdoors for foreign intelligence. This internal friction comes at a time when the Ministry of Home Affairs has just integrated “Prajna,” an advanced satellite imaging system developed by the DRDO, to bolster real-time surveillance. While the government maintains that these upgrades are essential for national defense, the Opposition has moved privilege motions, accusing the leadership of misleading the public about the extent of foreign tech dependency. The debate underscores the growing anxiety over digital sovereignty and the difficulty of balancing rapid technological infrastructure growth with the need for secure, indigenous hardware.
