Nation Marks Bakrid Amid Nationwide Bank Closures, While Fuel Price Hikes and Demographic Commitees Spark Political Waves

Life across several Indian states saw a shift in pace today as the country observed the major Islamic festival of Bakrid (Eid-ul-Adha), bringing a shortened working week for public institutions and financial sectors alike. Following updated state-wise moon-sighting announcements, major banking institutions, including the State Bank of India, HDFC, and ICICI, kept their physical branches closed across multiple states like Delhi and Telangana, shifting the entirety of transactional volumes onto digital banking, UPI networks, and mobile applications. The National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) similarly suspended all active trading operations for the day, granting a brief lull to a financial market that has otherwise been reacting sharply to broader macroeconomic shifts. Beneath the festive pause, however, the political climate remains intensely charged following a steep, consecutive series of domestic petrol and diesel price hikes that have seen fuel costs surge by roughly ₹7.5 per litre in less than two weeks, drawing sharp criticism from opposition leaders pointing out historical crude oil metrics. Adding fuel to the political discourse, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the formation of a high-level committee under retired Supreme Court Justice Prakash Prabhakar Naolekar to launch a comprehensive assessment of “unnatural demographic changes” allegedly stemming from illegal cross-border migration. With public focus divided between festive celebrations, navigating unexpected retail fuel inflation, and tracking highly contested policy initiatives regarding national demographics, this week stands out as a complex intersection of cultural tradition, economic adjustments, and intense structural governance.
