In separate messages, the Prime Minister lauded the “outstanding contribution” of both states to India’s progress, highlighting Gujarat’s vibrant culture and Maharashtra’s rich history of social awakening and leadership. In Mumbai, the traditional parade at Shivaji Park saw a massive turnout, featuring cultural tableaus and police processions, though some traffic diversions were in place. Meanwhile, in Gujarat, Gandhinagar hosted several high-level events focusing on the state’s industrial achievements and future growth. These celebrations commemorate the 1960 Bombay Reorganisation Act, which created the two states on linguistic lines. Many government offices, schools, and stock markets across both states are closed today in honor of the milestone. The Prime Minister’s message specifically noted the “dynamic and enterprising nature” of the people in both regions. For many, the day serves as a reminder of regional identity and the success of the cooperative movement in western India.
