Sports Ministry Clarifies Policy on Pakistan Amid Multilateral Ambitions

In a significant policy update, the Indian Sports Ministry has reaffirmed its strict ban on bilateral sporting series with Pakistan while carving out a clear exemption for multilateral international events. This clarification comes at a crucial time as India prepares to host a series of major global tournaments leading up to the 2026 Asian Games and its bid for the 2038 Olympics. The directive ensures that Pakistani athletes will be granted visas for events governed by international bodies like the IOC or FIFA, preventing India from facing potential sanctions or losing hosting rights. However, the ministry was firm that “home-and-away” bilateral series, particularly in cricket, will remain suspended indefinitely due to ongoing security concerns and the legacy of past attacks. Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya highlighted that this “hybrid approach” allows India to remain a global sports hub while staying true to its national security principles. The move has been met with mixed reactions; some cricket fans lament the continued absence of the high-octane Indo-Pak rivalry, while others support the government’s refusal to “normalize” ties through sport. This policy ensures that upcoming world-stage events in New Delhi and Ahmedabad can proceed with full international participation, maintaining India’s reputation as a reliable host. As the 2026 sports calendar fills up, this decision provides the necessary legal and diplomatic clarity for organizers and international federations alike.
